Etymology

Speller Hill is Spelhou t. Ed 1Welbeck , Spellow Field 1781EnclA . 'Hill of speech,' v. hoh . Cf. Spelhoe Hundred (PN Nth 131) and Spellow infra 241. It lies by cross-roads at the highest point in a low-lying district. It was presumably the meeting- place of a local assembly (cf. Hanger Hill supra 92), but its nature cannot now be determined.
