Cocker Bridge

Early-attested site in the Parish of Aslockton

Historical Forms

  • Cokerbekbrigg 1375 Misc
  • Cocker Bridge c.1825 O.S.

Etymology

Cocker Bridge is Cokerbekbrigg 1375 Misc, Cocker Bridge c. 1825 O.S. In 1375 (Pat) we have reference to a “way called Cokerbek leading from Byngham to Whatton” and similarly in 1375 Misc. It looks as if the river Smite, or at least this upper part of it, was earlier known as Coker (bek ). The name is clearly identical in origin with Cocker Beck supra 3.
