Etymology

In Werrington and Wittering infra 247, we seem to have the same pers. name Wiðer , probably a shortened form of such a name as OE  Wiðergyld , cf. Ekwall, PN in -ing 89. Hence, 'Wiðer 's farm,' v. ingtun . As Werrington and Wittering are only seven miles apart, they may be named from the same person.
