Etymology

'Spring-farm,' v. wielle , tun . It is a parish with numerous springs. Bridges (i, 96) speaks of six. Some of these are mentioned in deeds printed in AD iii and iv, viz. Mikelwelle , Boneswell , Redewell , Halliwelle , Thunnewelle , while in 1330 (Ass ) we have mention of a Sautwelle , i .e. salt-well.
