Etymology

We probably have here OE  stūt , 'gnat, midge,' used as a pers. name, hence 'Stūt 's burh.' There can be no question of the word *stūt , 'hill,' postulated in PN D 192s. n. Brimpts, for the place lies in a valley, with no prominent hill near.
