Etymology

This is probably a compound of a lost ON  * , 'chough, jackdaw,' and þveit, hence 'corner of land frequented by jack- daws,' cf. Cawood (La, Y) in Lindkvist (184) and PN La 180.Thwaites may be a different place, as we have mention c. 1400 (NRS ii) of le Twheytes .
