Etymology

This may be for OE  ceorlena -tūn , rather than the normal ceorla -tūn , 'farm of the ceorls ' (cf. Charlton PN BedsHu 92 and Charlton PN Wo 105), but the ing - forms are found here much earlier than in those names, v. ceorl .
