Etymology

Surney Bridges and Surney Lodge is Sutheneybrugge 1437, Southeney 1444Ct , Cerney Lodge 1823 B. This may be for earlier ME  bysouthen ey , 'south of the eg or well-watered land.' For the modern form cf. Surbiton (Sr), earlier Subertone , which is doubtless for Suthbertone .
