Etymology

Walton Grounds is Waleton (e )1086 DB, 1331 Ipm, Walton (e )1086 DB et passim , Walton juxta Sutton Regis 1306FF , Waltun 1203–6 BM. This lies on the old Port Way. There are Roman remains in the neighbourhood (cf. VCH i, 201) and it may be that this is from OE  weall -tūn , 'wall-farm,' rather than wēala -tūn , 'serfs' farm,' v. wealh . See further Aston le Walls supra 32. For Grounds v. Newbold Grounds supra 17.
