Etymology

There is good evidence for an OE  pers. name Codd , v. Cutsdean (PN Wo 120). In Cottesbrooke we probably have an unvoicing of d to t before following s in spite of the immediately following b . Hence, 'Codd 's brook.' The alternative would be to derive it from the strong form Cott parallel to the weak Cotta , cf. Cottesmore (R), Cottesmore (10th Hyde), Cossall (Nt) DBCoteshale , Cottesloe (PN Bk 87), Cotesbach (Lei) DBCotesbece , and Cotteshyrst (BCS 1085) in Sunbury (Mx).
