Etymology

This is probably from OE  Scotta-tun , 'farm of the Scots or Irish,' with early loss of the inflexional syllable between the two t 's, cf. Catton 183supra . A similar explanation may hold for Scotton (L), LindsSurv Scottuna , etc. v. tun .
