Etymology

Middleton's Manor, Tortuna 1086 DB; cf. Joh. de Thorenton , lord of the manor 1259, Everard de Thortone 1286Ass ; probably from þorn and tūn . According to Blomefield (VI 352) Booton was in two parts or manors at the time of the Domesday survey. He has Botuna and Tortuna in mind, both entered under South Erpingham Hundred. He says that the latter was afterwards called Middelton 's , which was a manor in Booton and Witchingham. Blomefield's opinion is repeated in VH Nf II 148, 159. John Morris' edition of Domesday Book identifies Tortuna with Thurton in Eynesford Hundred (TG 10 21), but in DB it is actually placed in South Erpingham Hundred.
