Etymology

The most likely explanation of this name is, as Ekwall (DEPN s.n.) suggests, that it was originally OE  *Rygetūn 'the farmstead or village where rye grows', v. ryge , tūn and that OE  tūn was replaced by ODan  'a farmstead, a village'.
