Etymology

'The hillock growing with willows', v. wīðig , cocc 1 . Since at least 1086 DB, the generic has been confused with cot 'a cottage', but spellings with cocc greatly predominate. That the area was one where willows once grew in profusion is otherwise indicated by the name of Sauvey Castle infra .
