'The shallow ford', v. sc(e)ald, ford . Initial OE sc [ʃ] is replaced by Scand sk [sk] in the first el., although the former sound seems to have survived as late as the early 16th cent. Late 12th and 13th cent. forms having u for l are due to AN influence.
