Etymology

'(The settlement of) the family or followers of a man called Peotla', v. -ingas . *Pēotlingas is a folk-name which survives also in adjoining Peatling Parva infra . The OE  masc. pers.n. Pēotla is unrecorded but is presumably a diminutive of the recorded OE  Pēot . It is uncertain whether the earlier surviving plural forms refer to the two settlements of Peatling Magna and Peatling Parva or represent the original *Pēotlingas , although spellings such as Parva Petlinges 1225, 1226 Cur, Parva Pedlinges 1237 RGros incline to the latter.

Affixes are MLat  magna 'great', micel (muche), mikill and grēat q. v .
