Etymology

'The wood', v. holt . Thomas Nevill ', Thomas Nevyll held the manor in 1498, 1502Peake , Johannes Nevell in 1520ib and another Thomas Nevell in 1537ib . Earlier it was held by abbas de Burgo Sancti Petri 1316 FA (i.e. the Abbot of Peterborough), hence ~ Abbotes 1316 FA, v. abbat . The township lies one mile north-east of Medbourne. Note MLat  iuxta 'next to, by' in the early suffix.
