Etymology

'The middle farmstead, village', v. meðal , tūn . The Scand  adj. meðal 'middle' may have replaced OE  middel . Forms with u for l are due to AN influence. The affix ~ Mubray , ~ Moubray , ~ Mowbray (with various other spellings) is common from 1282 Cl. Rogerius de Moubray held the manor c.1130 LeicSurv, Robertus de Mulbrai in l.12GarCart and Willelmus de Mobray in 1200 Cur.
