Etymology
Probably in origin an OE *cildatūn 'the estate of young men of noble birth', v. cild (cilda gen.pl.), tūn , but Scandinavianized with the generic replaced with bȳ and with the use of initial ON [k]. The e.13th-cent. spelling with Ch - is an AN style for the voiceless stop. Forms with Ke - are due to AN substitution of e for i .
