Etymology

'The long village or estate', v. lang 1 , tūn . Church Langton is styled Church Towne 1564 Nichols, 'the township with the church'. For the medieval and later affixes, v. kirkja , chirche , churche . A church may have existed here at least as early as the Norman period, since an effigy which is probably of this date is now located in the vestry passage of the present building, the earliest fabric of which is of the late 13th century.Church Langton may well have been the focus of the original Langton which stretched as far as East Langton, now a separate township a half mile to the south-east. Note the township known as East Langton or Church Langton 1846 White, v. East Langton infra .
