Etymology

Founded in 1162 by William, Earl of Mortaigne, Parcarius de Linus and Sir Andrew Lutterel originally as a priory of Premonstratensian Canons, the abbey became the mother house of Blanchland, Cockersand and Hornby in the North, v. abbaye and note MLat  abbatia 'an abbey'.
