Etymology
'Krōk's farmstead, village', v. tūn . The ODan pers.n. Krōk (ON Krókr ) is an original by-name meaning 'crooked-backed' or poss. 'crooked-dealer' (v. SPNLY 181). The p.n. is to be compared with South Croxton (Lei), Croxton (L) and Croxton (St). For extended discussion of this name, v. L 299 and SSNEM 375. The spelling Crawson (1577) shows typical Leics. 16th cent. and later loss of t in the group -ston .
Oliverus Sarazin held land in neighbouring Warwickshire in 1252 Fees, but there is no record, apart from the feudal affix to the p.n., of the Sarazin family's holding land in Croxton. Bertramus de Cryoll was granted the manor in 1239Rut and it was held by his family as late as Margeria de Crioll 1319 ELiW and Nicholas de Criel 1328 Banco. The manor was in the possession of Lord Roose of Belvoir in 1590Rut and later.
