Etymology

Wengeo (6″) is Waringho 1307SR (p), Waringehowgate c. 1450, Warengeho hill c. 1470, Warengeocrosse t. Hy 8Add , Warengehoo hill 1564 Wills, Wangeyhill t. ElizAdd , Wangeo hill feild 1594Rental . The forms are late, but there can be little doubt that this name goes back to OE  Waringa hōh , 'hill or spur of land of the people of Ware,' v. ing , hoh , and cf. Hertingfordbury infra 227 and the history of Jay Wick (PN Ess 335). The phonetic development of the name has clearly been influenced by the neighbouring Bengeo (infra 215).
