Etymology

Stroat, to Stræt 1061–5 ASChart cix, Strawte 1575FF , Stroote 1587 ib, Stroat (e )1595 ib, 1637 InqM, Strete 1624FF ; in Welsh this place or Tidenham was Istrat Hafren 12 Land (c. 700 this would be *Strat Habren ). The place is on the Roman road to South Wales and the name may be from OE  stǣt 'Roman road'; the later forms would appear to have been influenced by Lat (via ) strāta or rather by some Welsh  form of this, in which -aw - (a usual development of Lat ā in Welsh) was analogically substituted; there is no evidence of OWelsh having borrowed Lat  strāta , but if it had done so the OWelsh  form would have been *straut .
