Etymology

'Duck farmstead', v. dūce , tūn . The change of -ct - to -ght - is a common phenomenon in p.ns. like the numerous Broughtons, Leightons, etc.; that of ME  -gh - to -f - in Dufton is dialectal (cf. Phonol. §§ 32, 36).
