Etymology

v. stoc 'dependent farmstead'. The manor was held by Osbern Gifard in 1086 DB, by Helyas Giffard in 1169 P, 1221Ass , and continued in the possession of the Giffards till at least the 14th century (1268 Episc, 1285, 1303 FA, 1322 Pat, 1333 Ipm, etc.).
