Etymology

Coed-Ithel Weir, pisc ' de Ithelswere 1288MinAcct , Ytheleswere 1307 Ipm, Ethallswear 1777 M. 'Ithel's weir', v. wer (here one in the R. Wye). The pers.n. is MWelsh  Ithael , Welsh  Ithel ; it is found in ME in Sa and He (cf. Reaney 178). The modern form is from Welsh  coed 'wood', and Coed Ithel itself is across the Wye in Monm.
