Etymology

'(At) the new farmstead', v. nīwe (wk.dat. nīwan ), tūn . On the dialectal change of ME  -ewen - to -aun -, which occurs in other Nauntons (ii, 34, 105 infra , Wo 158, etc.), Frampton (ii, 32), Brawne (ii, 153infra ), etc., cf. Phonol. § 22. For the affixes v. wald and Cotswold (2supra ).
