Etymology

Alney Island, 1779 Rudder, Alneio Hy 2 (1314) Ch, Auney 1327MinAcct . This has been identified with OE  Olanige of ASC (s.a. 1016), but the latter is of different origin and probably in Deerhurst; cf. Naight Brook (ii, 79supra ). Alney is probably 'Ælla's island' from the OE  pers.n. Ælla and ēg, here referring to the water-meadows lying between the Severn and the Leadon.
