Etymology

Maidenhill Fm, Medenhulle 1275 Ipm, Maiden hill 1692GR 536.'Maidens' hill', v. mægden , hyll . The significance of p.ns. con- taining 'maiden' is uncertain; occasionally they denote 'land owned by maidens', but other possibilities include 'places where maidens gathered', or 'easy obstacles (such as maidens could overcome)', cf. Medbury (Bd 71), Maidenford (D 26), Maiden Castle (YW iv, 70).Maiden Hill (ii, 190infra ) is the name of a hill with an ancient encampment. Cf. also Maiden Hill, Maydes Castle (94, 233 supra ).
