Etymology

Rushen Gout, rihshammes puylle 986 (Ric 2) KCD 654. 'Watermeadow overgrown with rushes', v. risc , hamm , pyll 'creek, stream' (cf. prec.); gout is e.ModE  gout 'water-channel' (probably from OFr  esgout 'sewer'), used along the Severn marshlands for an artificial drainage channel, a ditch (cf. EDD s.v.).
