Etymology

'Farmstead near the hill', v. clopp(a), tūn and cf. Clapton (i, 198supra ); a short steep ridge here rises from the low-lying land of the Severn (grid 156–6697). The clop is referred to also in the local f.ns. Clophammede 1492 Aug, 1516MinAcct , Clappe Ridge , Clapham meade and Clapinge 1575TRMB .
