Etymology

'Farmstead associated with Guthhere', v. -ing 4 , tūn . The first el. is, in view of the Guther - spellings, from OE  Gūðhere rather than Gōdhere , though the latter is not impossible. Uckington (85supra ) similarly has many spellings with o - instead of u -. In 1287Ass 278, m. 27d, Hugh de Upton' stated in evidence that the place was called Godringdon ' not Goterington '.
