Etymology

Wickster's Bridge, 1830 M, pontem de Wiggestowe c. 1363 Works, Wikestowe 1608 Inq, Wickster Fm . 1777 M, Wickstow 1839TA .Probably, in view of the modern forms, OE  wīc, stōw 'dwelling- place, camp'. It is on the Roman road from Gloucester to the south, but no ancient remains have been observed. Cf. Wickstow (225infra ).
