Etymology

'The old fortification', v. ald , burh . Called 'on the Hill' to distinguish it from Oldbury upon Severn (8supra ), and 'Burdones' from the family of Bordon or Burdon who held the manor in the 14th century (1303, 1346 FA); cf. also Burdon Court (32infra ).
