Etymology

The el. OE  *clopp(a), which seems to denote 'a lump, a hill', has been fully discussed by Ekwall, Studies 136 ff (cf. EPN i, 99–100 s.v.); it appears to have a WSax  provenance and is found several times in Gl, Clopley (179 supra ), Clopton (241), Clapley (258), and Clapton (ii, 224infra ). On the later forms in Clap - which are dialectal cf. Phonol. § 26.
