Etymology

Hamstalls, Hamstal (l )1301 Ipm, 1372GR 421, Hampstal 1377Ass , Hampstalls 1544 LP. Possibly OE  hām-stall 'homestead', but the second el. may be OE  stall or Merc  stæll in the sense 'fishery', since the place was so described in 1301 (Ipm); in that case the first el. may be hamm 'river-meadow'.
