Etymology

Harcomb Wood, Hertescumbes welle 11 (c. 1200) KCD 1367. 'The stag's valley', v. heorot , cumb . Harcomb Wood is on the north boundary of the parish (grid 144–241289) and the coomb runs down west towards Evenlode. The welle (called to heort wellan 969 (11th) BCS 1238) is without doubt the spring just below the wood near Horn Fm. The stream, a nearby hill and a spring are called on heort broc ', Heortdune , and heortuuelle (213, 220 infra ), and there was a bridge called Hertesbrugge (infra ).
