Etymology

Folly Lane (6″). Cf. Am 'land 1273 RH, Ambrelond 1525Monoux , Amberlane 1558, Amberley lane 1572, Amberland lane 1576, Amborowlane 1601, Ambrye lane 1628, Ambrow (e )lane 1633, 1636Ct , Ambrey Lane 1652 Deeds. This earlier name is perhaps from OE  ampre , 'dock, sorrel.' Cf. Amberlond in Roydon (14thWalthamC ), Emberdon in Matching (1288Survey ), Ambyrmede in Wickham Bishops (1347Ct ), Amberden infra 524, Ambly infra 632 and Ampleforth (PN NRY 56), Ampreforde , Ambreforde DB.
