Etymology

Shern Hall Street (6″) is Shern (e )wel (l ) Street 1560Monoux , 1713 W'stowAS xiii, Shernhall Street 1697 ib. xi, Shannal Street 1777 C. Cf. Sharnal St (PN K 120). 'Filth stream,' v. scearn , wielle . The stream is now piped underground, but floods still occur after excessive rain.
