Etymology

Cockhides is Cokehedes Crofte 1553 Pat, Cocke hedd 1556 ER xv. The forms are late, but the place may owe its name to the common growth of some plant known as cockhead or cock 's head , such as the common red clover, knapweed, woundwort, etc. v. NED and EDD s. v. cock 's head .
