Etymology

Tylers Hall (6″), Tylers Common, Tylers Shaw (6″) is Tigelhyrste 1062 (12th) KCD 813, Tichelherst , T (h )ielherst (e )13thWalthamA (p), Tyelerst 1270Ct (p), Tilherst 1400Ct , Tylehurst 1484 IpmR, Tyleherste , Tylersherst t. Hy 8Survey , Tylers grove 1574Sessions .v. tigel , hyrst and cf. Tilhurst in South Benfleet (1315Survey ).“Signifying a wood affording earth fit for making Tiles; and such is the soil at this day, near Mr Branfill's, above the Medicinal Spring; where is a house called Tyler 's, and where the best Tiles and bricks in these parts are made” (M i, 108). Identical with Tilehurst (Berks), where also there are tile works.
