Etymology

OE  hyrne-stede, 'the site by the corner of land.' Harsted or Hastings Green was formerly a hamlet of Birdbrook, surrounded by the parishes of Finchingfield, Stambourne and Steeple Bumpstead. Transferred to Bumpstead in 1885. Hastings , from the family of Robert de Hastinge (1251 FF).
