Etymology

v. Helion Bumpstead infra 508–9. Bumsted-steple because, according to Norden, it was first adorned with a Steeple or Spire. “'Tis otherwise styled Bumsted ad Turrim , at the Tower, from a Tower that stood near the road leading from Haverill to Bathorne-bridge” (M ii, 348). It is also known as Little Bumpstead.
