Etymology

Bellhouse Fm is Belhous 1393 Cl, p. 1420 FA, Belhows 1495, 1500 Ipm, Bellows 1412 FA. In 1274 Thomas de Belhous acquired the manor of Stanway. He was the brother of Richard of Ramsden Bellhouse (supra 168) who gave him that manor in 1283, but he made Stanway the principal family seat. His second son, Nicholas, settled at Aveley, where his name survives in Belhus supra 122.
