Etymology

Brockhold's olim Roos is le Roos Magna 1373 IpmR, Roos 1419 ib., 1437FF , Roos alias Brokholes 1433 IpmR, 1550FF . The name is manorial in origin. The manor was held by the Roos family of Great Sampford who also had the manor of Asheldham (v. New Hall supra 209). They were descended from Robert de Roos , lord of Helmsley Castle. This manor, with that of Asheldham, came to Geoffrey Brokhole by marriage in 1419 (IpmR). Cf. Roos Hill infra 539.
