Etymology

Marks Hall is Rothyng (e ), Rothing Marcy , Rothing Marci , Rothing Macy 1291– 1329 FF, 1303–46 FA, 1481 ECP, Roinges Serlonis de Marci 14thTilty , Mersey 1325 Inq aqd, Marks 1768 M. The modern name commemorates the possessions here of the family of Gilbert de Merc (1201 FF), the above forms those of Serlo de Marcy (1197 ib.), the same family that left its name in Stondon Massey supra 81.
