Etymology

Redindike (6″) is Writeledich '1297For . There can be little doubt that this place takes its name from its proximity to the boundary of the parish and forest of Writtle. For rl > rn cf. IPN 106. The resultant [ritən] was associated with the common field-name ridden or reden (cf. Woodridden supra 31) found in woodland areas. dich indicates that the forest-boundary probably consisted of a bank with a ditch on the outside. Cf. EAS xviii, 1 ff., for similar examples.
