Etymology

This might be taken as a late ingtun- derivative of the Anglo- Scandinavian name Klak (cf. Glassthorpe PN Nth 83), but it is more likely to be from a native English Clacc (cf. Plaxwell's Barn ib. 149 and Claxfield (PN K 277 and v. Introd. xxviii)).For the sound development cf. Claughton (PN La 162), Clactune DB, Clatton 1246, Clayghton 1554, said to be pronounced Clighton , and Claughton (ib. 178), Clactun DB, Clafton 1246, Clatton 1257, now [klaftn]. For Claston cf. Coastley (PN NbDu 48) earlier Coccesley .
