Etymology

Well Fm (6″) is Wellā 1086 DB, Wel (l )hall (e )ffee c. 1350ColchA , 1578Survey , Welfeld 1542FF . This Domesday manor has not hitherto been identified. Round stated definitely that it was not South Weald. In DB it is entered under Barstable Hundred as held by the Bishop of London, who also had the manor of Laindon. Frith Wood in Laindon was also part of his possessions, and here, according to Morant (i, 247–8), was the manor-house where the courts were held. The farm is on the Laindon border, and less than a mile from Frith Wood.
